DEATH HAS claimed Nigeria’s former president Muhammadu Buhari at the age of 82 while receiving medical care in a London clinic, according to an official statement from his longtime spokesperson, Garba Shehu.
Confirmation of the former leader’s passing came on Sunday afternoon through a brief statement shared on social media platform X. Shehu disclosed that Buhari died earlier in the day while receiving medical care in the United Kingdom (UK).
“The family of the former president has also announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London, with words of prayers,” the statement read.
Buhari, who led Nigeria as a military ruler from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, remained a significant political figure long after leaving office.
He was known for his firm stance on anti-corruption and efforts to rebuild key sectors of the Nigerian economy during his tenure.
