As Lagosians trooped out today to cast their votes in the Chairmanship and Councillorship elections across the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas of the state, citizens, stakeholders, and observers have expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the exercise, describing it as peaceful, well-coordinated, and indicative of growing public trust in the electoral process.
Among the early voters was Alhaja Abimbola Jakande, wife of the late elder statesman and former Lagos State Governor, Alhaji Lateef Jakande. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to witness the day and appreciated the large voter turnout in Odu-Olowo in honour of her late husband’s legacy. “I am glad and give glory to God for witnessing today and I thank everyone voting here because of the love for Mr Jakande,” she said. Speaking with hope and optimism, she prayed for the success of the candidate, Oluseyi Jakande, and all others who would emerge to serve the people. “I pray that the works that Oluseyi Jakande will be doing on Odu-Olowo will be successful. I pray for Lagos State, it would be better in their term, and they will serve well,” she added.
Oluseyi Jakande, speaking at Ward L, Odi-Olowo, described the process as commendable. He lauded the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) for what he called an “organized and impressive” electoral exercise. He noted a significant improvement in turnout in what is typically an elite area known for voter apathy. “What I have seen so far is very commendable. LASIEC should be commended for a very organized electoral process, it is quite impressive, including the turnout. Even as this area is known for its low turnout, what I have seen this time is impressive and the apathy has disappeared,” he said. Confident of victory, he urged citizens to see voting as a civic duty regardless of their political affiliations. He also advised that LASIEC and INEC work together to improve the ease with which relocated voters can update their cards. While acknowledging minor challenges, Jakande clarified that “we are not going to expect all polling units to have all materials at the same time” and confirmed that no significant delays had been reported.
In Agboyi-Ketu, Mayor Dele Oshinowo the Executive Chairman, praised the turnout, especially after a slow start. He attributed the participation to improved local government autonomy and the commendable performance of the incumbent chairman. “The turnout is massive. Though at the early stage it was quite low, like an hour later the turnout became impressive. People are coming out to vote,” he stated. Oshinowo acknowledged a brief delay of about 30 minutes to an hour, but commended LASIEC’s logistical execution. “They really planned out their logistics well, they were able to move materials fast to each polling unit,” he noted. He expressed confidence in the victory of his party and described the collaboration between LASIEC and security agencies as effective and reassuring. “My expectations are that my party should come out victorious. The election manual is transparent, the security agencies are working well with LASIEC and other external agencies, and they are impressive,” he concluded, speaking from Ward D, Iyase Close, Code Number 128.
However, the process was not without controversy. At Polling Unit 009 in Agboyi-Ketu, Tosin Moses Ogundipe, a resident and community leader, reported a conflict of interest involving a LASIEC Presiding Officer. “We were quick to identify that the PO in charge of our polling unit is the wife of the councillorship candidate of the PDP,” he said. The issue was swiftly escalated and resolved after LASIEC officials intervened. “She was interviewed and confirmed she is the wife of the councillorship candidate. She has now been replaced, and the situation is calm,” he stated. Aside from this incident, Ogundipe noted that the voting process had been smooth and efficient, with each voter completing the process in less than two minutes. He also remarked that the youth showed up in large numbers, with over 65 percent of the area’s population comprising young voters. “The turnout is great. We are certain we are coming out victorious. The zone is populated by the youths, and they turned out well,” he said.
Across various wards, observers and voters alike praised LASIEC for its timely deployment of officials and materials, efficient coordination, and improved public confidence in the electoral process. With voting concluded in most areas without violence or disruption, Lagosians await the final results with hope that the voices of the people will be reflected in the outcome
