Germany’s state security officers have raised concerns that Russia may be flying drones, including military UAVs, over a key nuclear power plant in Brunsbütte, northern Germany. This comes amid heightened tensions due to Germany’s strong stance against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, having committed €28 billion (£23.77 billion) in support.

According to intelligence sources, drones have been spotted over the area, which also houses an LNG terminal and several chemical plants, since at least August 8. It is suspected that Russian agents are operating these drones from civilian ships in the North Sea.

The Schleswig-Holstein State Office of Criminal Investigation believes these drones could be Russia’s Orlan-10 models, capable of speeds over 90 mph and a range of 370 miles. Previously used in Syria for reconnaissance and support operations, these drones are now a concern for authorities.

Police in Lower Saxony and Hamburg are on high alert for further drone activity as investigations continue.
