Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, on Monday played host to the captain of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, William Troost-Ekong, during a courtesy visit at the Lagos State Government House.
The meeting, which focused on the future of Nigerian football and the transformative power of sports, served as a platform for both leaders to discuss critical issues around youth empowerment, talent development, and national aspirations in sports.
Governor Sanwo-Olu praised Troost-Ekong for his leadership on and off the pitch and commended his determination to lift the AFCON 2025 trophy and lead Nigeria to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Super Eagles captain also expressed his long-term vision of giving back to society, developing local talent, and supporting initiatives that uplift communities through sports.
“We’re on the same page,” the Governor noted. “In Lagos State, sports is more than just a game. It’s a powerful tool for youth development, community building, and creating real opportunities. We are committed to upgrading sporting facilities, investing in grassroots talent, and working with those who share this vision.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu reiterated that his administration would continue to foster partnerships with local and international stakeholders in the sports sector to empower young Nigerians and position Lagos as a hub for sports excellence.
The Governor added: “I commend William for leading by example. His commitment to the sport and the nation is inspiring. Lagos stands with him, and together, we will build the future of Nigerian sports.”
The visit comes as part of broader efforts to encourage collaboration between the government and key figures in the Nigerian sports industry, particularly ahead of major international tournaments.
Troost-Ekong, who led the Super Eagles to a silver finish at AFCON 2023, remains a pivotal figure in Nigeria’s football scene and continues to use his platform to inspire the next generation of athletes.
The Lagos State Government, under Governor Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, has continued to prioritize sports development, evidenced by its recent upgrades of sporting facilities across the state and consistent support for youth-focused athletic programs.
