The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will go back to Lagos state after his second term in office.

The minister stated this while replying to former governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir ElRufa’i during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today.

ElRufa’i had said the coalition would send Tinubu back to Lagos in 2027 on retirement.

But during the interview Idris said Tinubu was performing well in many regards, saying Nigeria’s economy was picking up.

He said, “Yes, the president will go back to Lagos at the end, God willing, after his second term in office. We expect him to go back to Lagos. He is just in his second year and with all the good things that are happening under this administration.

“When Tinubu came in, two important policy decisions were taken. The unification of the naira and the removal of oil subsidies. There are the issues that have been there for decades.

“If you want to have a major surgical operation, there must be some anesthesia and some pain. We are not saying that there is no pain. What we are saying is that the government is on the right track. The economy is picking up. Things are looking better. The food price is not what we used to have last year. The prices are coming down.”

Idris also dismissed the claim that President Tinubu was making some moves to replace Vice President Kashim Shettima in 2027.

He added that the choice of who becomes the vice president is the prerogative of the president.

He added, “This has only been in the imagination of some people. I have seen the president and the vice president working at a close quarter. It is just politics that is playing out. When President Tinubu was given the ticket in 2023, did you hear of Shettima’s name? He picked him. The choice of who becomes vice president is the prerogative of Mr. President.”
